Aims
The module gives students the opportunity to gain further practical 'hands on' experience of the research skills taught in the ‘Advanced Research Methods in Forensic and Investigative Psychology Module’, in relation to a research question of their own choosing, subject to ethical and practical constraints. In particular, the module will assist students to develop a deeper understanding of the conceptual, methodological, and logistical problems that may be encountered when conducting research.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Apply appropriate methodologies to research questions and analyse data within the accepted parameters and conventions of that methodology.
2.
Undertake data collection appropriately in line with the stated methodology and with due consideration of research ethics.
3.
Compose a research project that pays due regard to the conventions of peer reviewed psychological research and demonstrating specialist psychological knowledge.
4.
Demonstrate a deep assessment of the importance of ethics and how to consider them appropriately in research specifically within the field of forensic and investigative psychology.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This module is primarily undertaken by the student in the form of fieldwork, data analysis and thesis write up; however, students are also encouraged to maintain regular contact with their supervisor (approximately 15 hours one to one supervision). The lectures will provide general guidance on the whole process and cover important aspects of conducting empirical research such as key dates for the students to work towards, ethical considerations, choice of methodology, data collection and analysis strategy.
Module Overview:
The Empirical Project Forensic and Investigative Psychology module gives you the opportunity to gain further practical experience of the research skills taught in the Advanced Research Methods in Forensic and Investigative Psychology Module, in relation to a research question of your own choosing (subject to ethical and practical constraints).
In particular, the module will help you to develop a deeper understanding of the conceptual, methodological, and logistical problems that may be encountered when conducting research.

Additional Information:Within this module, students will be supported to critically evaluate current research and propose original research questions. As part of this, students will evaluate different methodologies and select the appropriate methodology for their own research study. Consequently, students will continue to advance their knowledge and skills to a higher level. Whilst receiving guidance from tutors, students will be expected to demonstrate self-direction in their approach to problem solving and decision making. In designing and conducting their research project, students will strengthen their skills in planning and organisation as well as their ICT skills. This module will also help students to develop their professional written communication, in the form of a thesis which describes their research project and findings.
