Aims

To build on the research and critical skills acquired in Research Project 1 module. To develop the skills to construct a coherent written argument in essay form. To demonstrate a critical awareness of the relationship between theory and practice.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Effectively communicate in writing by producing a coherent, historically aware and critically enquiring text about an aspect of the contemporary art scene.
2.
Know how to choose appropriate research and visual materials, in the development of a cohesive analysis.
3.
Demonstrate an ability to reflect critically upon the relationship between research, practice and theory in student's own work.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Students will select topics relevant to their practice and overall concerns in consultation with tutors. These could be (but will not be limited to) particular artists, biennial and survey themes, arts policy and infrastructure, or their own work. Their research and writing will be supported by tutorials. This work will be tested against, and made with reference to, their on-going studio practice.
Module Overview:
This module aims to develop your skills to carry out research in the field of history and theory. It:
  • develops your ability to construct a coherent written argument in essay form
  • provides knowledge of various modes of writing
Additional Information:This module is designed to support the production of a significant illustrated written text in which the student will demonstrate an understanding of contemporary art practice, its histories and conceptual frames, and how these may be relevant to the development of their practice. This could be writing about particular artists, biennial and survey themes, arts policy and infrastructure, or their own work. The writing will be supported by seminars and tutorials and their on-going studio practice.
