Aims

To enable staff to develop a critical understanding of their teaching and assessment practice in Higher Education.

Learning Outcomes

Identify learner needs and appropriate learning support mechanisms.

Critically explore internal and external factors to the institution that influence learning, teaching and assessment practices.
3.
Consider the impact of regulatory and advisory frameworks on Higher Education.
4.
Critically review the evidence base for effective assessment practice.
5.
Critically reflect on professional practice and development needs.

Outline Syllabus:What is a good HE teacher/good learning experience Effective learning, teaching, assessment and feedback methods Appraising teaching Strategies for active learning Using educational technology to support and enhance learning Critical perspectives of HE Critical reflection on practice
Module Overview:
This module provides you with the opportunity to explore the range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies and technologies available and in use in HE contexts for use with a diverse range of students. It aims to:
  • develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required of HE teachers
  • draw upon theoretical knowledge of teaching and learning, and upon best academic practice, and asks you to apply this underpinning to your own subject context and teaching responsibilities
  • provide an opportunity to be observed by an experienced, trained observer from your work area
Additional Information:This module provides participants with the opportunity to explore the range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies and technologies available and in use in HE contexts for use with a diverse range of students. It aims to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required of HE teachers. It draws upon theoretical knowledge of teaching and learning, and upon best academic practice, and asks participants to apply this underpinning to their own subject context and teaching responsibilities. It also provides an opportunity for participants to be observed by an experienced, trained observer from their work area. They will receive feedback on their planning, teaching and reflection skills.
