Aims
To explore the potentialities of urban design as a method and tool for urban regeneration, and to facilitate students in the consideration, design and presentation of ideas for the spatial development and regeneration of towns and cities.
This module will be undertaken alongside students form the Master of Architecture programme module 7121MARCH.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Analyse contemporary urban design themes through in depth research and the intelligent development of a critical argument.
2.
Evaluate innovative and visionary urban design theories and precedents in the context of the project work.
3.
Synthesize the above knowledge and skills in the production of an urban design strategy for the redevelopment of a substantial piece of cityscape.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Students will consider the importance of ‘visionary thinking' in the pragmatic development and regeneration of towns and cities and the crucial role that new visions have in the regeneration of cities. They will be required to be aware of recent regulation, legislation and best practice concerning the studio topics.
With the focus on urban design as a mainstay of contemporary urban regeneration, a primary tool for a sustainable future and the creation of ‘sustainable communities’, students will engage in an active, contemporary project, both in terms of group and individual work.
