Aims

To provide a critical knowledge base of the philosophical foundations of applied health and social research. To enable students to develop the skills necessary to plan and execute a research project that is relevant to their area of study.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically discuss the philosophical perspectives that underpin health and social research.
2.
Synthesise material from various sources in order to identify, define and defend an appropriate research question.
3.
Critically evaluate data collection techniques.
4.
Identify and systematically interrogate research evidence.
5.
Critically explore the ethical dimensions of research.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The relationship between research and the social, political and economic environment Positivist and interpretative perspectives in research Nursing as a complex intervention Qualitative methods, data collection & analysis Quantitative methods, data collection & analysis The research process: asking research questions, research design, data collection, dissemination The research process: funding and support, peer review, policy development Ethics Systematic review and meta synthesis
Module Overview:
This module encourages you to develop your skills as a potential producer of research, as well as your ability to systematically evaluate research outcomes from a variety of sources. It aims to:
  • provide a critical knowledge base of the philosophical foundations of applied health and social research
  • enable you to develop the skills necessary to plan and execute a research project that is relevant to your area of study
Additional Information:This module encourages students to develop their skills as a potential producer of research, as well as their ability to systematically evaluate research outcomes from a variety of sources. The module is firmly based in a thorough philosophical understanding of the nature of health and nursing research and its implications in health and social care practice. The dissertation module offers students an opportunity to explore, in depth, an area of personal or professional interest that relates to their programme of study.
