Aims

To provide opportunities for educational professionals to: Further extend their knowledge and understanding of practitioner research approaches in education Design and plan their research Develop an empirical evidence base for the analysis of theory and practice and the application of research methodologies appropriate to the nature of the identified area of enquiry Develop critical faculties in relation to the application of research methodologies in workplace/professional settings Design, plan and construct a research proposal.

Learning Outcomes

Provide a rationale and aim(s) for the proposed enquiry related to professional practice.
2.
Demonstrate a critical awareness of current research, scholarship and, or, policy in the chosen field of enquiry.
3.
Show a critical understanding of the research methodologies and approaches that complement the aims of the research.
4.
Deliberate the issues, strengths and limitations of potential data collection and analysis tools suitable for the enquiry.
5.
Justify the application of the principles of ethics in educational research to the proposed area of study.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Research paradigms: the nature of educational/professional research activity and its relationship to concepts of professionalism, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, case study, action research and other approaches. Ethical issues in researching professional practice. Selected research methods (design of research instruments and analysis and interpretation of data) drawn from the following: The use of literature and other documentary evidence Selected statistical techniques including consideration of the use of quantitative surveys/questionnaires The use of surveys/questionnaires to collect qualitative data The use of interviews/focus groups The use of observation techniques. Issues related to validity, reliability, objectivity and subjectivity. Approaches to reporting and disseminating research.
Module Overview:
This module equips you with a critical overview of the major research methodologies and methods for critical relfection on professional practice and wider research applications. It aims to:
  • provide support and guidance in preparing a research proposal for an appropriate M Level dissertation
  • provide opportunities to: further extend your knowledge and understanding of practitioner research approaches in education
  • design and plan your research
  • develop an empirical evidence base for the analysis of theory and practice and the application of research methodologies appropriate to the nature of the identified area of enquiry
  • develop critical faculties in relation to the application of research methodologies in workplace/professional settings
  • design, plan and construct a research proposal
Additional Information:This module equips participants with a critical overview of the major research methodologies and methods for critical reflection on professional practice and wider research applications. It provides support and guidance in preparing a research proposal for an appropriate M Level dissertation.
