Aims
To equip the Advanced Practitioner with the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to initiate and titrate basic insulin regimens.
Learning Outcomes
1.
critically understand insulin secretion in the normal state and in type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
2.
evaluate the best insulin regimen to suit the individual’s lifestyle, commitment to self management and clinical needs
3.
assess the factors related to effective patient self-management of insulin treatment
4.
demonstrate basic skills and competencies to initiate and titrate insulin regimens
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Insulin secretion in normal physiology and in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, pharmacology of insulin (short acting, rapid acting analogues, NPH, long acting analogues. Mixed preparations), competency frameworks for initiation and titration of insulin regimens, insulin delivery devices, local protocols, national guidance, injection technique, needle and device selection, blood glucose monitoring. Education requirements at initiation and ongoing, safety and risk management issues.

Additional Information:This module aims to equip the practitioner with the understanding required to gain skills and competencies in insulin initiation and titration, and to equip them with the basic skills and competencies to undertake insulin initiation. Ongoing regular practice and clinical supervision in the work place will be required to develop these basic skills and maintain professional competency.
The module is available as a CPD and is a core module on the Masters in Advanced Health Care Practice (Diabetes).
