Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Learning Strategy
Through group seminar and individual tutorial, students undertake a series of directed creative exercises in their specific craft base aimed at further developing technical/creative skills and processes, supported by study of the properties and expressive modes available in their specific discipline and extended specialist study of artists or material connected to their specialism. Where feasible this will be offered in conjunction with a placement or observation opportunity negotiated between student, tutor and host. In addition, students may use the concurrent Cultural Climate of Theatre 2 (ensemble) to develop their Specialist Skills work in practical mode as appropriate.
Assessment will be through a submission of a portfolio of creative work as agreed with the tutor and relevant to each student’s individual craft base to include an overall evaluative report of the learning. This may include written text, director’s/choreographer’s notes/logbook or working text/script, and performer’s log and/or working script plus recordings. The evaluation should be based upon and evidence by documented participant observation and appropriate secondary critical research material.
Indicative content
Whilst content will largely be determined by each student’s specialist focus the practice will be specifically informed by the research and analysis of the chosen area of craft. The potential artefact will be established in semester one prior to commencement of the project in semester two – the student/s will pitch their idea to their peers and staff followed by a Q&A. Following this the students will submit a 500-word creative brief establishing their areas of research and practice. This document will form the basis for the creation of a learning agreement between students and staff. Each student or teams of students will be overseen by a project supervisor. This is an independent project but a degree of collaboration between students is possible e.g., director/actor, designer/director, writer/actor, director/producer or an alternative combination. Each of the following artefacts will be created either through the development of new writing / devising or utilising an existing published play text.
Potential Artefacts – there potentially others New play – duologue (30 mins). Marketing campaign – e.g., audience data, image, copy, identifying potential venues or festivals and show website (1500 words in addition to a 15 min presentation). Design e.g., costume, lighting, sound, set and mapping / multimedia) (1500 words in addition to a 15 min presentation). Solo performance (15 mins) e.g., storytelling, clown, TIE etc. Director – Final outcome, rehearsal recording, director diary (1500 words).
As indicated above each option would allow the student to pursue their specialist area of practice.
Additional Information:Students are advised to keep a learning log for this module to inform their evaluation of their development as part of their portfolio.
