Aims
1.To provide a critical knowledge base of the philosophical foundations of health and social research.
2.To enable the student to gain a sound foundation in research design and methodology
3.To prepare the student to carry out empirical and literature based research.

Critically analyse how evidenced based practice is informed by the research process within your own specialist field.

Critically analyse the appropriateness of research methods relevant to own professional area

Critically analyse purpose and context of research and the basis for selecting appropriate research methodology and designs

Critically analyse the philosophical location of research approaches
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Philosophy of research
•The relationship between research and the social, political and economic environment
•Positivist and interpretative perspectives in research
•Action research
•Qualitative methods, data collection & analysis
•Quantitative methods, data collection & analysis
•The research process: asking research questions, research design, data collection, dissemination
•The research process: funding and support, peer review, policy development
•Critical appraisal of research through the use of established frameworks and tools

This module encourages you to develop your skills as a potential producer of research, as well as your ability to systematically evaluate research outcomes from a variety of sources. You will be exposed to a variety of activities designed to engage with skills in applied research, based on theoretical concepts. The module is firmly based on a thorough philosophical understanding of the nature of research and its implications in health and wellbeing. It aims to:
