Aims
1. Gain an understanding and knowledge of historical or contemporary design and visual arts.
2. Research, comprehend, question, compare and contrast and use concepts and theories relating to the chosen subject and/or their practice.
3. Present written work of a professional standard, using the Harvard System of annotation and reference.
4. Synthesise material from dispersed and distant sources, so that a fresh view is substantiated or an existing view freshly supported.
5. Analyse visual material independently, and to use visual as well as other evidence in the course of constructing a discussion.
6. Demonstrate critical capacity in relation to text as well as images, and demonstrate independence of judgment.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The subject identified will enable students to investigate a topic of individual choice; it should be a subject area for which plentiful information is available. The research can have a focus in an aesthetic, technical, visual, marketing or historical point of view but must involve the integration of knowledge with aspects of your course.
The following aspects of the written piece need to be considered:
Inclusion of an appropriate abstract
Well developed and valid question or hypothesis
Use of a range of contemporary and appropriate information
Professional presentation, with a high quality writing style and layout
Appropriate referencing and bibliography
Through group seminar activity students will apply appropriate documentation and recording of their work for presentation purposes in both career and postgraduate application. Students will be kept informed of university and national exhibitions on notice boards.

For students with specific learning needs, a more suitable and appropriate form of this assessment may be negotiated.
This module provides the opportunity to submit a professionally presented dissertation (6000 word illustrated, Harvard-referenced paper, double spaced and bound). It allows each student to work independently and in depth from a chosen subject relating to Art & Design and/or a theme deriving from their own practice.
