Aims

The module will support students in the identification of the most significant threats to safety and protection within the community. The module will facilitate students in the assessment and appraisal of tactical options that impact upon the community. The module will develop understanding around the challenges to delivering effective investigation and harm reduction in the community. The module will assess how personal resilience, self-awareness and decision-making contributes to success. The module will see students identify how they can make a difference and develop as an investigator based on understanding the threats.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Understanding how the composite parts of policing interact and differ in the impact upon communities
Understand and apply relevant legislation when conducting a professional investigation
Recognising the key challenges to police legitimacy in modern society – including racism, misogyny, corruption, terrorism and protest
Understand how to apply ethical decision-making in complex scenarios
Self-awareness, resilience and compassion
Communicating the message
Time management and decision-making
Additional Information:
Lectures will provide the students with information and theories. Students will explore evidence-based policing in detail and identify ‘what works’ as they prepare and develop a presentation to deliver to a partner agency or community group on the threats to the safety of the community and how they will collaborate to reduce harm through professional investigation. Students will then apply their learning as they develop a reflective action plan to enhance their support to victims through better investigation and collaboration with others.

This module outline must be read in conjunction with the module appendix and mapping spreadsheet which details the National Policing Curriculum content areas, learning outcomes and minimum content relating to each of the module learning outcomes, which can be found on the Module Key Information tab on Canvas.
