Aims
Professional Preparation prepares the students for seeking out, developing and securing employment opportunities in a chosen field by furnishing them with the confident ability to understand their own practice as well as providing support in developing a personal industry database. There are directed towards developing a deeper understanding of the performing arts sector; identifying transferable skills, leading practitioners, funding structures and artistic and commercial trends and policies. They will consider the value of self-generated projects and how best to develop their creative ideas. They will discuss and develop interview techniques. Each student will use a range of research skills in order to compile a detailed portfolio that supports a Career Action Plan.
Learning Outcomes

Evaluate the potential issues and processes leading to employment in chosen fields and construct a clear plan for personal management and administration.

Research, prepare and present a research file in a work-friendly and clear format, designing a career action plan and personal development plan
3.
Communicate and express ideas and information articulately, in interview format, developing the appropriate analytical, investigative and linguistic skills to argue and appraise ideas effectively
4.
Articulate a sound knowledge of professional practices, evaluating the possibilities of other disciplines, new practices or environments within a potential career network
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The course will be delivered through a series of lectures/seminars aimed at supplying the student with the necessary notes on which to build research, supported by visiting specialists. They will be given an appropriate and interesting insight into the career support structure within the field of live arts.
The lectures/seminars will cover topics such as:
Personal administration including tax & National insurance.
Further vocational training
Infrastructures
Contacts and networking
Curriculum Vitae and business cards
Personal presentation and marketing
Interview techniques with external employers
Arts funding, grants, trusts and business planning
Practitioner's presentation
Personal administration
Organisations and publications
Seminar discussions of performances within the wider context of artistic policies
Careers within education
Postgraduate study
Throughout the series of lectures/seminars, a structure will be created in which each student will start developing their own research file. The file will be used to guide a Career research plan, it will also reflect research into practitioners, funding trends, Arts Council initiatives and commercial opportunities. This file will be assessed as part of an interview (see assessment strategy).
