Aims

The aim of this module is to build upon the experience gained through Design from Text 1 and 2 and once again work with a professional director to develop the design for a fully conceived hypothetical production. The students will be given more choice and variety in terms of text and venue than at the other levels, allowing them to further develop and practice their negotiation and collaborative skills. The module is the culmination of the Design from Text strand and so there will be a greater emphasis on the ability to manage the timescale of the project, work independently and successfully juggle this project with other, inevitable institutional commitments.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Liaise and collaborate effectively with a director, developing a creative and cohesive working relationship.
2.
Research independently and effectively, creating a design for performance from a given text.
3.
Develop imaginative, original ideas with a sense of practical and technical considerations of a given space.
4.
Present a design to a high standard that communicates and applies ideas and technical information fluently, utilizing a wide range a two and three dimensional tools.
5.
Present a design effectively, both verbally and in an exhibition situation.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module will begin with lectures and seminars introducing the given texts/brief and possible field visits to theatre spaces. There will then be a series of individual meetings with the director and design staff (set, costume and lighting) alongside advanced model making and costume design workshops/tutorials. The final presentation of the finished proposed design will be before the entire group. Separate to the presentations there will also be an exhibition of the final designs, so designers will be able to further develop their visual presentation skills. Both forms of presentation are assessable elements.
