Aims

Counselling and psychotherapy courses need to equip trainee therapists to work with trauma and develop an understanding of the psychological disorders and symptoms including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Without awareness and knowledge of trauma there is a potential risk that the therapeutic process could re-traumatise clients who have suffered trauma events. Trainee counsellors need to have an awareness of the assessments and treatments available for clients suffering from historical or current trauma.

Learning Outcomes

Understand through role play the emotional, psychological, behavioural and emotional effects of trauma

Contextualise and critically analyse the experiences or events which are characterised by the term trauma.

Critically discuss the emotional, psychological, behavioural and emotional effects of trauma
4.
Review and critically evaluate evidence based practice approaches and techniques that support clients suffering from trauma

Outline Syllabus:Dissociative identity disorder Experiences or events that are characterised with the term trauma Manifestations of historical or current trauma Emotional, psychological, behavioural and emotional effects of trauma Theories, strategies and techniques to support clients suffering from traumatic events Examination of evidence based practice that supports clients suffering from trauma The role of assessment and treatments for clients presenting PTSD and trauma effects Factors affecting the development of PTSD Historical child abuse Psychological trauma in contemporary society Recognising the effects of working with trauma on the therapist.
