Aims

To provide an understanding of advocacy and mooting and to be able to argue a case on appeal to an appellate court.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate a firm grounding of the basic concepts, values, principles and rules of the English legal system and EU law.
2.
Select key research issues and to identify relevant primary and secondary sources of information.
3.
Use a wide variety of standard and legal and other electronic sources of information.
4.
Apply gained legal knowledge to complex problems,  to reflect upon and evaluate this application and to draw logical reasoned conclusions that are supported by argument and legal authority.
5.
Evaluate and rank unfamiliar arguments in the light of established statute law, judicial decisions and authoritative legal commentary.
6.
Use appropriate legal terminology and language both orally and in writing
7.
Present an argument in a way which is comprehensible to others and which addresses their particular concerns or questions.
8.
Organise, prioritise their time and to work so as to meet strict deadlines.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This module provides, in a practical context, experience and practise in mooting and advocacy. The following areas will be covered during the formal sessions:

• Understanding the legal grounds of appeal
• Correct and appropriate ways to address a court
• Correct ways to cite judgments and other material
• The hierarchy of law reports
• Public speaking
• Mooting skills
• Skeleton Arguments
