Aims

The dissertation module provides students with the opportunity to design and carry out a substantive piece of research analysis into a topic of their own choosing. Students will have an opportunity to produce an in-depth analysis of the findings drawn from their extended investigations. Students will have a choice of either a primary research based dissertation or a literature based dissertation.

Learning Outcomes

Select, evaluate and apply critical thinking to a subject drawn from the social sciences and/or a health and provide an informed theoretical/conceptual justification for the study of that topic.
2.
Demonstrate critical engagement with academic conventions appropriate to their chosen research paradigm.
3.
Synthesise evidence obtained from a range of literature and electronic secondary sources of information/data.
4.
Critically reflect upon the methodological and ethical considerations and approaches used during the course of the research.
5.
Analyse, evaluate and draw conclusions from the data generated by the study of the topic.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The dissertation provides students with the opportunity to carry out a substantive piece of research over two semesters on a topic of their own choosing drawn from the social sciences and/or health studies. This choice is made in negotiation with subject tutors. 1. For most of this module, students will work independently and be expected to use the research skills and concepts introduced in levels 4 and 5 to conduct their own research. 2. Supplementary research methods training relating to the research process, conduct; analysis and presentation of research findings expected within a dissertation will be provided during tutorials.
Additional Information:This dissertation project will be carried out under the guidance of the module leader. The module leader will review the subject and proposed methodology of the research from an ethical perspective and give advice and direction. All research undertaken within the college goes before an internal ethics committee for approval chaired by the Dean of Higher Education.
