Aims

1. To provide students the opportunity to conduct a focused piece of critical independent work in an international context, under supervision, on an area congruent with the themes and substance of the Sociology programme. 2. To provide a vehicle for the improvement and development of a variety of transferable skills and abilities appropriate to the task in hand, from identification of appropriate topic/s through to the development of a study programme tailored to the needs of the student and the presentation of a clear, coherent and robust piece of reflective written work. 3. To encourage students to monitor and reflect critically on their own learning.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Identify a manageable topic, and design a plan of study, including a timetable, for an agreed programme of learning beyond the environment of the classroom.
2.
Reflect upon and blog critically on own learning and experiences, including experiences of carrying out research in an unfamiliar socio-cultural environment.
3.
Further develop study and apply research skills in an international setting on a topic of interest not covered elsewhere in the programme through engagement with the relationships between the specific international case under investigation and wider issues of theory, method, policy or practice in an area within the rubric of critical sociology.

The module has a compulsory international fieldwork element incorporated which provides the backdrop to the student’s study focus. In order to attend and participate in the field visit, ethical approval must be gained via the proposal and research ethics application form. If ethical approval is not granted, an alternative desk-based research project must be arranged.
