Aims

1. To facilitate students to engage critically with key theoretical, conceptual and methodological issues in the construction of a self-directed project. 2. To formulate a research plan and gather, synthesize and make use of relevant literature.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Identify an appropriate and original topic for examination and critically reflect on the research process, identifying contingencies for completion.
2.
Co-ordinate and synthesise their findings in an academic format, adhering to guidelines on structure and referencing.
3.
Present a coherent and reflective discussion of work in progress.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Series of lectures: formulating a hypothesis, appropriate methodology and research methods, organisation and management, writing styles and presentation, references and appendices; Subject specific tutorials; Writing up and data analysis workshops.
Additional Information:This online module requires students to undertake a sustained piece of academic analysis and present this in a proper academic form. This allows students to achieve a thorough understanding of theoretical and methodological issues relevant to their chosen subject of study. Students must be able to demonstrate they have the ability to carry out a sustained piece of research on an appropriate topic and it may be the case that proposals are turned down. Students must discuss their work in progress via a presentation early in the 1st Semester. Students must follow the 'style notes' and produce work using proper academic form. Ethics approval must be granted if required.
