Aims

This module is designed to provide future criminal justice practitioners, who are presently studying at LJMU, with a basic understanding of the psychology of sexual violence. This is very important, as LJMU students aspiring to work in the criminal justice system in future, WILL encounter this controversial topic and probably many times, during their careers. This module therefore aims to: 1. Provide students with an understanding of the different types of sexual violence (i.e. contact and non-contact offences, offences involving adults and children, known and stranger victims, and offences involving internet etc.). 2. Provide students with an understanding of the psychological theories and motivational explanations which underpin our current understanding of why offenders commit such offences. 3. Engage students in the applied nature of working in this field, by guiding them through the assessment and formulation of a case example.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module aims to provide students who aspire to work (or are presently working) in the criminal justice system with a basic understanding of the psychology of sexual violence. The module will achieve this by introducing students to various topics, such as: What is sex offending? What do we know about sex offenders? Theories of sexual offending (adult and children); classification of sexual offending and sexual offenders; sexual deviancy and its relationship to sexual offending; assessing sex offenders (risk and formulation); treating sex offenders in clinical settings. This module will provide a basis for future study and/or employment in this fascinating area.
Module Overview:
This module aims to provide criminal justice practitioners of the future a basic understanding of sexual violence and sexual offenders, providing you with an understanding of the different types of sexual violence and an understanding of the psychological theories and motivational explanations which underpin our current understanding of why offenders commit such offences.
Additional Information:The Psychology of Sexual Violence is a 10 credit optional module for level 6 students studying Psychology, Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice, Criminology and Psychology, and Policing and Forensic Psychology. This aims to provide criminal justice practitioners of the future, with a basic understanding of sexual violence and sexual offenders.
