Aims

This module aims to develop students’ critical understanding of the support available for people with a range of disabilities/ additional needs.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically evaluate the needs of individuals across the lifespan with a range of disabilities
2.
Critically analyse the impact of key approaches to supporting individuals with specific disabilities and needs
3.
Critically discuss the language and communication difficulties that can be associated with disabilities.

Outline Syllabus:Review of lifespan approaches to understanding disability Consideration of the relationship between disability and identity The needs and support available for individuals with: Autistic Spectrum Disorders Differing aspects of Dyslexia Emotional Social and Behavioural Difficulties Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Language and communication difficulties Strategies for supporting effective communication: PECS, Social stories, Makaton
