Aims

1. Introduce students to the politics of health by exploring different elements such as everyday provisions, drug formulations and testing and pandemics; as well as discussions on state and privatised systems. 2. Develop an understanding of how health and politics are intertwined and the impact this has on provision and preparedness. 3. Encourage students to engage with ‘comparative health’ to understand the different approaches adopted across the world to different situations so that a more nuanced understanding of different systems can be gained.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Topics to cover in the module will typically include: • How do we understand health? Theories and concepts • State vs. privatised healthcare provisions • Understanding ‘everyday’ illnesses • Developing medicines • Pandemics and our responses to them • Access to healthcare provisions • Pandemics & state preparations • Trafficking • Animal testing
Additional Information:This module will explore the intertwined relationship between politics and health through a thematic approach. This will allow students to engage with different issues relating to health and care provision by exploring different systems, provisions and responses to illness. This will not only allow students to gain insights into how systems operate, but it will also allow them to engage with the politics of health from a more personal perspective following 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.
