Aims

1. To deepen students understanding of the experience of disability. 2. To deepen students understanding of models and theories of disability. 3. To develop students’ ability to apply models and theories to contemporary issues in disability praxis.

Learning Outcomes

Critically assess the style, structure and content of a range of different models and theoretical perspectives on disability.
2.
Critically evaluate the role of the media in the social construction of disabled people's experiences.
3.
Critically discuss the relationship between disability theory and disability activism.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Language, definitions and discourses of disability. Medical, social and post-social models of disability. Theoretical approaches to disability. Representations of disability and the disability arts movement. Disability activism.
Module Overview:
1. To deepen students understanding of the experience of disability. 2. To deepen students understanding of models and theories of disability. 3. To develop students ability to apply models and theories to contemporary issues in disability praxis. This module will give students the opportunity to examine in depth the concepts, theories and debates in considering both the models and theories surrounding the meaning of disability and of disabled peoples experiences. Students will be given the opportunity to develop areas of study that reflect their own interests.
