Aims

To enable students to support patients from different cultural backgrounds in a holistic approach to care

Learning Outcomes

Critically review factors that influence health and well-being in the global context.

Critically analyse the relationship between migration and health outcomes.
3.
Evaluate the challenges and benefits associated with increasing globalisation in healthcare
4.
Investigate the implications of culture and global health issues for the development of person-centred care in mental health nursing.

Outline Syllabus:Health outcomes associated with migration Culturally appropriate health literacy and health education Cultural perspectives on health/rituals Anti-discriminatory and culturally competent practice Use of interpreters and third party organisations in clinical practice Political influences for globalisation Globalisation of health care Health tourism Safeguarding Global health priorities and patterns in health (mental and physical) Global patterns for communicable and non-communicable diseases Epidemiology, demography, genomics and wider determinants of health Belief systems The health consequences of increasing global connectivity and mobility Culturally sensitive communication International Diagnostic Criteria in MH The role of culture and religion in MH diagnosis and treatment The influence of the pharmaceutical industry in research and treatment MH in the context of asylum / immigration/ disaster
Module Overview:
This module enables you to support patients from different cultural backgrounds in a holistic approach to care.
Additional Information:In addition to the contact hours above there are 160 private study hours. 85 hours are guided, this includes online and assessment preparation. Online hours are e-learning. 75 hours are independent study Please note that workshop hours account for simulated theoretical learning, in accordance with NMC standard 3.4
