Aims

•To provide an introduction to the Child Care system •Through the use of reports of child abuse cases, show the development of child care law, practice and policy •To provide a critical overview of the law, practices and procedures •To critically examine the various legislative and procedural responses to the problem of child abuse

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of the definition, forms and extent of child abuse

Demonstrate a knowledge of policies, practice and the legal regulation of child protection

Demonstrate a critical knowledge of the child protection process, especially evidentiary issues

Demonstrate an ability to evaluate information and to draw logical reasoned conclusions that are supported by argument and legal authority

Demonstrate a well-developed ability to use a wide variety of standard and legal and other electronic sources of information

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• Child Abuse –definition, recognition, statistics • The Child Protection System of England and Wales as set out in Working Together to Safeguard Children (2015) for practitioners, managers, key workers’ inter-agency guidance • Child Protection –strategies and their analysis • Child Abuse –procedural, legal administrative and managerial responses linked to Reports • Child Law –evidence and procedures; representation of children • The Civil and Criminal Law relating to Child Protection, Children Act 1989, Protection of Children Act 1999, The Children Act 2004 • Local Authority statutory responsibilities and rights • Domestic Violence legislation, Family Law Act 1996
