Module Content

Outline Syllabus:By looking at a number of films and the different ways in which these have been interpreted by critics, the course will highlight some of the major theoretical concerns of film studies through both close readings of these interpretations and through a consideration of the films themselves. Some of the interpretative approaches to be studied will include identification, time-image, film as art, film as social and political documentation.
Module Overview:
In this module you will explore historical and contemporary approaches to film interpretation. You will be able to critically examine and evaluate approaches to film interpretation so that you can engage with the serious analysis of film.
Additional Information:The course aims to deepen student's knowledge of the most important theoretical writings in film studies. Film Studies' staff research interests will drive the choice of films and texts. The course assumes that there is no non-theoretical approach to understanding film. Every interpretation must use some kind of 'lens' through which to understand its subject. The course will allow students to step back and examine the lens of criticism itself. Students will also be able to hone their own critical skills
