Aims
To build on and develop students’ previous writing skills to produce and present sports news content while introducing them to the professional functions of a sports journalist.
To enhance their understanding of the sports industry as a global phenomenon.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Write sports news items and features using professional principles.
2.
Identify why sport is an important part of news-oriented media and public life in general, recognising how sports journalism serves an expanding market, having a wider role in society.
3.
Criticise players' and coaches' performances in order to report on sporting events, demonstrating an ability to exercise editorial judgement.
4.
Analyse and evaluate the global significance of sport and the sports media industry, with an understanding of the function and performance of governing bodies, such as FIFA and the IOC.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Writing sports news; writing and researching sports features; analysis and evaluation of sports performance; cultural aspects of sport; the impact of governing bodies
Module Overview:
This module enables you to develop your understanding and practice of the reporting/function of sport in modern news-oriented media. You will also gain a greater understanding of sport as a cultural and economic entity, underpinning notions of joy and despair and providing a peaceful platform for the expression of civic and national pride. You will study through workshops and real-time learning simulations, as well as live match reporting exercises on location.
