Aims

1.To enable students to acquire vital work-based learning skills around the world of freelancing and the life of a freelance writer. 2. To develop students’ abilities to devise and develop work-based learning project with all the personal and professional development of skills which this will entail. 3. To help students identify organisations and companies who might employ writers for freelance or community roles and develop students’ understanding of where they could fit within such organisations. 4. To equip students with professional experience and contacts which will have a positive impact on their potential employability after graduation.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a knowledge of ethical, financial and evaluatory considerations, vital to the success of any independent project.

Develop a knowledge of organizations and community stakeholders vital to the freelance writing world.

Analyse their own professional and creative practise with a view to building a successful professional career s as a writer.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Students will be given instruction on a wide-range of freelance possibilities and professional occupations open to a writer; in group discussions and ‘troubleshooting’ sessions they will develop their critical faculties by offering advice to their peers. They will devise and develop a work-based learning project which takes their skills as a writer out into a public-facing position or role; creating a detailed plan of their ideal project. They will also research organizations currently working in a similar area to their interest, producing a case-study of one such organization.

Additional Information:Students will be given instruction in, and a deep knowledge of, the world of a freelance writer, planning their own project but also studying successful businesses, charities and community stakeholders who may use writers in their current practise.
