Aims

To generate critical and theoretically-informed awareness of the principles which underpin the scope and rationale of international criminal law To develop advanced understanding of who international criminal law applies to To develop advanced awareness of the range of crimes covered by international criminal law, including crimes committed by governments and states To generate a critical understanding of the ways in which international criminal law is directly and indirectly enforced on the national level To develop critical awareness of the International Criminal Court's policies, practices and decision-making

Outline Syllabus:The framework, foundations and boundaries of international criminal law The subjects of international criminal law The range of crimes governed by international criminal law The nature and extent of state crime General principles of responsibility under international criminal law Indirect enforcement of international criminal law Direct enforcement of international criminal law The International Criminal Court: its decision-making, powers and processes
Module Overview:
This module develops student awareness of international criminal law: its historical development, its principles of criminal responsibility, and its direct and indirect enforcement, using the development of the International Criminal Court as a focus and case study.
