Aims

This module aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the socio-cultural place of substance use. It will investigate different paradigms and perspectives on substance (mis)use and explore relevant drug policy. The module will also seek to provide students with a comprehension of how we practically respond to substance use via treatment interventions.

Examine and explain the relationship between substance use, crime and disorder and criminal justice responses to this.

Outline Syllabus:The place and role of substance use in society The use, abuse and (mis)use of substances in society Harm, risk and classification Constructing and deconstructing 'drugs' Exploring the link between drugs, alcohol and crime The war on drugs and drug prohibition Old prohibition and new prohibition - drug policy reform Drug policy in the UK Alcohol policy in the UK Interventions with drug users: models of treatment Interventions with drug users: addressing (mis)use in the criminal justice system Interventions with drug users: addressing (mis)use outside of the criminal justice system
Module Overview:
This module aims to provide you with a broad understanding of the sociocultural place of substance use. It will investigate different paradigms and perspectives on substance (mis)use and explore relevant drug policy. The module will also seek to provide a comprehension of how we practically respond to substance use via treatment interventions.
Additional Information:This module attempts to critically deconstruct the role and place of substance use in contemporary society. Furthermore it will provide an analysis of the legitimacy of drug policy and the efficacy of interventions with substance (mis)users.
