Aims
To develop the knowledge and skills required to effectively manage the care of the acutely unwell adult.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Analyse the pathophysiological processes underlying the aetiology,
nursing care and medical management of a variety of common disorders affecting
critically-ill patients.
2.
Critically evaluate the uses and potential complications of a variety of assessment
and monitoring methods utilised when caring for acutely unwell adults.
3.
Demonstrate the ability to provide effective, holistic care of the highly-dependent
adult, with detailed knowledge of the evidence-base underlying the care given.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Legal and ethical issues in High-dependency care/Acutely unwell patients.
Review anatomy and physiology of major body systems.
Psychological care of patients and relatives.
Overview of pathophysiology.
Tracheostomy care.
Overview of the examination of respiratory, cardiovascular and abdominal systems.
Basic ECG interpretation and acute coronary syndromes.
Respiratory support.
Renal failure and renal support.
Introduction to pharmacology.
Wound management.
Additional Information:The module offers the student an opportunity to enhance their own experience of manging care of dependant adults. The module will develop further the students underpinning knowledge giving them a clear focus, which spherically relates to the adults they care for in practice.
