Aims

After completing this module, students will be able to develop a critical understanding the core concepts, issues, theory and research in the social care of people recovering from mental ill-health

Critically analyse the key theoretical models that inform our understanding of mental health

Critically evaluate services, contemporary and historical, available to people who experience mental distress
3.
Critically evaluate the legal and social policy context of mental health service provision

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Mental health history; medical models of mental distress; social models of mental distress, including, issues of gender, race, class and poverty; recovery model; statutory mental health services; third sector mental health services; service user and carer perspectives; mental health law and social policy; ethical dilemmas in mental health practice; the correlation between social inequalities and social exclusion and mental health.

This module focuses on the current service frameworks for mental health provision, mental health policy and practice and the impact on the mental health and wellbeing of service users.
