Aims

1. To acquire and develop knowledge and skills in research and appreciate evidence based practice 2. To carry out and write up a small piece of primary research from either (or both of) the qualitative or quantitative traditions in the topic area of the relevant degree.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Plan, conduct and analyse primary research using methods drawn from quantitative and/or qualitative traditions.
2.
Examine methods of research objectively with consideration to validity and reliability.
3.
Recognise different epistemological and ontological assumptions and how these relate to specific designs and methods for empirical research.
4.
Reflect upon the experiences and skills gained and identify how these can inform future research.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module enables students to build on the core skills and theories of the Level 4 module and to apply these to an in depth study of an area of their work. The module will begin with a detailed look at how to apply, carry out and make use of core skills from both the qualitative and quantitative research tradition. The second half will consist mainly of independent study supported by one-to-one tutorials together with sessions on presentation of data and writing up of the report in an appropriate format. A key focus area of the module is to examine a range of issues around research ethics.
Additional Information:The key emphasis of this module is to train students to become active research practitioners by requiring them to plan and conduct a small-scale piece of research and report on their findings. Students will be required to submit a research proposal (formative assessment only) which should include consideration of any potential ethical issues. Students will also be expected to share their experiences with their peers as part of their presentation at the end of the course. The focus of the presentation will be to present a research plan of the students choice. Regular tutorials will provide opportunities for informal formative assessment to support student learning and discuss their overall progress. For the first half of the presentation students will present an overview of their findings from their research report. The second half of the presentation will focus on the students reflection of the process and any changes they would make for future research.
