Aims

To investigate current approaches to the study of mental health. To critically evaluate theories of mental health disorders and related treatment options. To consider models of mental health disorders and the benefits of moving towards a biopsychosocial model. To evaluate the impact of chronic health conditions on mental health and wellbeing.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module critically examines core issues in the field of mental disorders. These include the conceptual and theoretical basis of definition and classification of a range of mental disorders often encountered by psychologists practising in clinical settings, such as hospitals, prisons and community facilities. These will include, for example, conditions such as depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders and substance abuse disorders. Students will be presented with information that guides the diagnosis, explanation and various treatments for disorders such as these, with a view to providing a basis for future study and/or employment in this fascinating area.
