Aims

The module aims to develop the students creative skills in song writing. The module will explore both music and lyrics and have a specific focus on developing the students own creative identity within the context of the commercial marketplace – i.e. audience targeting.

Learning Outcomes

Describe and demonstrate an advanced understanding of song form and the structure of the popular song

Demonstrate the ability to write cohesive and well developed songs which exemplify an understanding of genre and are clearly linked to a specific market
3.
Demonstrate the ability to produce songs which are creative and exemplify originality and integrity

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module is highly practical and student focused. The module will explore in lectures, workshops and tutorials the following • Approaches to writing and creative partnerships • Market appeal and audience targeting • Genres and musical style • Song structure (standard and adapted) • Melody writing (standard and varied) • Lyric writing: concept / ‘hook' / development / repetition / rhyme / genre • Harmony
Additional Information:The module allows the student to explore their creative song writing skills and approaches to song writing. Assessment is via a presentation of at least three original songs.
