1. Examine the key issues that the region faces in the contemporary era 2. Develop an awareness of the historical roots of the contemporary situation in the region 3. Examine how IR theories and concepts aid understanding of the region in the contemporary era

Analyse the key issues facing the region in the contemporary era, and be able to assess the different states’ positions relative to each other

Critically reflect on the historical roots of the contemporary situation in the region

Relate IR theories and concepts to an understanding of the region

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Topics to discuss in the module will typically include: • Current issues facing the region • Key state and non-state actors in the region • Understanding the balance of power in the region and who are the major players • Historical events defining the region’s contemporary situation • Impact of external actors and non-state actors in the region
Additional Information:Module will focus on a particular region of the world based on what is of particular interest in the year of delivery, and contingent on the research expertise of the instructor.
