Aims
1. To further develop students understanding of qualitative research methods and strategies and to assess the appropriateness of their use.
2. To provide students with an opportunity to undertake qualitative research with organisations working within the sociological field.
3. To enhance collaborative presentation, group work skills and independent working.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Identify and assess a range of qualitative research strategies and methods and comment on their advantages and disadvantages.
2.
Work effectively as a group to plan a piece of qualitative sociological research with due regard for ethical practice and procedural standards.
3.
Collect and transcribe qualitative data in a real world setting
4.
Analyse and present qualitative data using computer aided techniques
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:An indicative range of topics studied includes:
• Epistemology, ontology and the research process.
• Evaluating the research of others.
• Secondary data analysis.
• Qualitative research methods and data collection
• Presenting research proposal and empirical information clearly
• Preparing for research
• Research in the 'real world' – practical application of research methods in the field
• Power, ethics and representation in the research process
• Analysing qualitative data, NVIVO
• Producing research report
Additional Information:Students will develop a range of essential qualitative research skills to undertake and reflect upon problem solving research within a supportive environment. The module builds on the EBL in level 4 and enhances students' abilities to engage in research activities. Students will undertake primary research to apply methods to real work settings and develop transferable skills. For students who are intending to write a dissertation at Level 6, this module provides an essential grounding.
