Aims
To provide theoretical knowledge on societal development from an archaeological perspective and some practical experience in archaeological, forensic anthropological, and geographical analytical techniques.
Learning Outcomes

Recognise the major cultural traditions around the world and their material culture.

Demonstrate proficiency in professional tasks required of an archaeologist.
3.
Critically evaluate pertinent archaeological literature, with a focus toward understanding current topics and controversies.
4.
Present a comprehensive review of specified topics/controversies for the purpose of academic discussion and debate.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Introduction to the theory and methods of archaeology; survey of archaeological excavations and discoveries in the Near East, Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas; core emphasis on the origins of agriculture and the emergence of social complexity; discussion of themes of environmental change, empire, colonialism, slavery and repatriation. Case studies to focus on the interpretation of human remains and burial practices of ancient societies from a forensic anthropology perspective. Field trips to museums in Britain exhibiting material culture from around the world.
Overall, it will provide students with a sequence of the global archaeological record and a thorough understanding of the archaeological approach. It will enable students to draw upon appropriate archaeological theories, methods, techniques and concepts in order to understand the past through material culture. The module will help students develop the ability to understand the archaeological interpretation of material culture and human remains and to set it within the greater historical context. It will give students a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in our world today.
