Aims
To critically assess the concept, theories and implementation of Development
To examine the phenomena of Globalisation (cultural, economic and political dimensions).
To highlight, via examination of specific topics and localities, the variable impact of globalisation on people and their environment and to evaluate the response to global processes at local and regional level.

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Geography of Development: Evolving nature of the development concept, Measuring development, Development theories, Development assistance, Geographies of inequalities.
Colonialism, Post-Colonialism and Neo-Colonialism; Legacies of the slave trade, modern slavery.
Cultural, Economic and Political globalisation (e.g. world trade, Fairtrade, cultural homogenisation).
Response and resistance to globalisation. International response to global development issues; Globalism versus Localism; Anti-globalisation movements.
Case study research on selected themes such as fashion and consumption, globalised cities.

Additional Information:The processes of development and globalisation are explored. Research will be conducted on selected case studies to highlight local and/or regional responses to global processes and the linkages between these different scales. Formative feedback is provided through interactive technologies and directed group exercises.
