Aims

After completing this module students should be able to: 1. To introduce students to a range of qualitative research methods 2. To foster students’ ability to undertake an ethically and procedurally sound research project 3. Develop students’ group working skills and communication 4. Empower students to design, collect, analyse and present qualitative data and findings carefully and with due regard for ethical procedures

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module seeks to cover an indicative range of topics including: • Introduction to qualitative methods • Interviews • Visual Methods • Documentary Research • Research Techniques and Topics • Ethics • Narrative analysis • Critical Discourse Analysis • Thematic analysis
Additional Information:As developing criminology researchers, this module is concerned with designing and undertaking a focused piece of research on the student experience using qualitative research methods. In carrying out the research and in collecting the data, we expect students to give due regard to both the philosophical basis of qualitative research and, just as importantly, to recognize the complex ethical issues that can often underpin research.
