Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This module introduces students to the historical foundations of the “war on terror” concept, by outlining the history of nationalist, anarchist and nihilist terror campaigns from the 1850s to the early 20th century. In this module, students will be introduced to the philosophy behind the terrorists of the fin de siècle, their tactics and attacks, as well as to the police and intelligence responses to their campaigns, and the broader impacts on modern society and culture. This includes discussion of the geopolitical consequences of terrorism, and the diffusion of fear – of both internal enemies and external enemies – across the transatlantic world in the years leading up to the First World Wart. In covering these issues of terrorism, fears and the development of intelligence networks, this module will present students with topics that are both contemporary in their relevance and fascinating in their history.
