Aims
This module introduces students to the key themes and debates in modern French history. Through the course of a series of workshops, students will have the opportunity to study key moments in the history of modern France and explore the recurring themes of ‘crisis’ and ‘renewal’ in modern and contemporary French history. Students will have the opportunity to draw upon a wide range of source materials and to analyse the history of modern France through a variety of historical approaches. A key part of the module will be a fieldwork trip to France.
Learning Outcomes

Identify and assess a range of relevant historical materials relating to this period in modern French history.

Demonstrate a critical understanding of some of the central aspects of modern French national and colonial history.

Examine and appraise a number of key debates in modern French history
