Aims
The aims for this module are to develop explorative processes in students' architectural design thinking, production and representation. Students will develop their abilities in creative detailed design, design development and resolution, underpinned by thematic architectural inquiry. This module will be informed by thematic research, as appropriate to each project. From a given starting point students are encouraged to explore and define the parameters of the field of inquiry for their project. In so doing, the aim is that they will devise their own objectives for research, brief, developmental interpretation and ultimately detailed design response
Learning Outcomes
1.
Evaluate and synthesise knowledge of appropriate theoretical concepts and topics to studio design projects and explain how these may influence architectural design.
2.
Evaluate and prepare a statement of intent/brief that responds to user requirement and local context.
3.
Critically evaluate architectural design precedents relevant to the function and organisation of design proposals, through the use of diagrams, images and written documentation.
4.
Demonstrate the testing of design ideas, to develop an initial concept through to final design.
5.
Prepare and present design projects of medium scale and complexity, using a range of media, and in response to a brief.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module will seek to seamlessly integrate explorative processes in the resolution of a design project. During this module students are encouraged to be exploratory in their conceptual ideas, design thinking and production. Their inquiries will be informed by a broad scope of thematic research. Initially, students will research the theoretical context of their field, and define the brief for their project. This will then be developed into a detailed spatial design proposal that addresses issues and challenges defined by that research.
Additional Information:This module develops explorative design thinking. A broad scope of research is used to demonstrate and explore themes and as a stimulus for the generation of design concepts leading to a detailed design project. Underpinned by this initial research phase, this module comprises one assignment; a thematically informed, detailed spatial design project.
