Aims
This module aims to instil students with an understanding of the processes of research, observation, recording and analysis, leading to their application of these to the design process, in conjunction with conceptual ideas. Urban spaces and their design become the focus for project proposals, with appropriate consideration of issues relating to urban design. The group working will expose students to the value of personal initiative in a team context involving research, surveying and planning skills, and formulation of design priorities.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural, social and intellectual histories, theories and technologies that influence the design of urban spaces, planning of communities and buildings through the analysis of an urban environment.
2.
Apply knowledge of the influence of the design and development of cities, past and present on the contemporary built environment.
3.
Analyse and review precedents relevant to the function, organisation and technological strategy of design proposals.
4.
Synthesise and apply urban design principles and present an urban design masterplan project, that assimilates a theme using a range of media, and in response to a brief.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module will commence with research and appraisal of urban environments. Students will work in small groups collaboratively, to research, analyse and understand an urban site. In this module students will study urban design, considering contextual relationships at a city scale. They will be responding to an overall project brief with defined requirements, from which they can develop their own interpretations.
Additional Information:This module introduces the principles of urban design and how these relate to the design and development of cities, past and present. It explores the role of urban strategy in shaping the contemporary built environment. Module outputs focus on the production of an urban design strategy for part of a city based on analysis of the existing condition.
