Aims

To introduce students to modern Latin American history. To develop students’ understanding of social and political change in Latin America. To enable students to think comparatively in geographical and temporal terms.

Learning Outcomes

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This course examines developments in Latin American history from independence to the present day. Themes may include, but are not limited to: post-colonial challenges and progress; urban and rural protest; populism and mass politics; revolutionary change; authoritarian rule; the legacy of state terror; the war on drugs; US policy towards Latin America; and the interaction between domestic politics and the international contexts (such as the Cold War).
Module Overview:
This module will introduce you to modern Latin American history and allow you to develop an understanding of social and political change in Latin America. This will enable you to think comparatively in geographical and temporal terms.
Additional Information:From the iconic image of Che Guevara to the television programme Narcos, Latin America has inspired and intrigued modern-day audiences. But what are the historical antecedents to this contemporary popularisation of the region? This course will provide students with an introduction to Latin American history during the nineteenth and twentieth century. Taking a comparative approach, it will focus on social and political change over time and will consider the domestic and international factors which have shaped the development of the region. Students deliver an unassessed oral presentation in class. No knowledge of Spanish is required or expected of students on this module.
