Aims

To enable students to examine the law relating to the environment including animals in terms of ethical, political and practical implications.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate an awareness of the impact upon law of other disciplines including politics, sociology, economics and ethics.
2.
Demonstrate a well-developed ability to use a wide variety of standard legal or other electronic sources of information.
3.
Demonstrate an ability to apply gained legal knowledge to complex problems to reflect upon and evaluate this application and to draw logical and reasoned conclusions that are supported by arguments and legal authority.
4.
Demonstrate an ability to present an argument in a way which is comprehensible to others and which addresses their particular concerns or questions.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:1. Environmental Law in context: International Law, Wild Law, Animal Law, Ecology and changing notions of ownership and control. (SB) 2. Human Rights pertaining to the environment. (GW) 3. Issues in the Protection of UK Wildlife (SB) 4. Environmental damage: Contaminated Land and Responsibility (AE) 5. Climate Change in context - peace and security implications (GW) 6. Oil and Gas Law – suitable for the C21st? (SS) 7. International Protection of Animals (SB) 8. Criminality and the Environment (SF) 9. The future of Environmental Law – the law of Ecocide (SB) This syllabus is subject to change in accordance with national and international developments.
Module Overview:
This module seeks to develop your critical understanding of the philosophical and practical foundations of the law relating to the environment and the creatures that populate it. You will demonstrate an awareness of the impact upon law of other disciplines including politics, sociology, economics and ethics with relation to the law relating to the environment.
