Aims

1. To develop the appropriate critical vocabulary to enhance the understanding of poetry. 2. To introduce students to a range of poetry from different periods, in different forms and from different cultural locations. 3. To identify the aesthetic qualities of different poetic traditions.

Learning Outcomes

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Teaching on the module will be based around an anthology, for example, The Norton Anthology of Poetry (currently in its fifth edition, 2014). The syllabus will be reconfirmed each year, altering slightly in response to changes in staff availability and expertise, as well as new opportunities for visiting speakers/practitioners, fieldtrips and other workshop sessions. The syllabus will encapsulate attention to particular poetic forms (including the sonnet, epic and elergy), and will be organised around writing from four broad historical periods: 1. Pre Eighteenth Century 2. Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century 3. Twentieth Century 4. Twentieth First Century
Module Overview:
This module enables you to develop a critical vocabulary to enhance your understanding of poetry. You will be introduced to a range of poetry from different periods, in different forms and from different cultural locations. Alongside this, you will learn to identify the aesthetic qualities of different poetic traditions.
Additional Information:The first assignment will ask students to compile a mini-anthology of poetry on a selected theme, and provide it with a critical introduction.
