Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Beginning with the revolutionary year of 1917, this module examines the lifespan of the Soviet “experiment”. From the avant-garde 1920s to the so-called “evil empire” of the 1980s, the interlocking political, cultural and social dynamics of the Soviet Union will be explored. The module introduces students to key themes in Soviet history such as the New Economic Policy, industrialisation and collectivisation, the Terror, Stalinism, the “thaw”, late socialism, and perestroika, with state policies assessed in terms of their impact on society. In workshops students analyse a diverse range of source material, including primary documents, film, music, and art, which will help to provide a sense of “lived experience” and a fuller understanding of life inside Soviet Russia. You will also read and discuss the most important debates in Soviet history. The module will highlight the different processes of change over time and how these might be assessed in terms of interpreting the overall Soviet experience.
