Aims
To develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of the context surrounding midwifery practice.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Critically analyse the role of the midwife from a national and international perspective interpreting historical, sociological and psychological influences.
2.
Articulate how the midwife is positioned within the multi-disciplinary team in providing holistic and safe care for women and their families.
3.
Critically evaluate how the midwife as the lead professional supports the health and well-being of women and their families.
4.
Discuss models of maternity care and how they can impact on maternal experience and outcome.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Development of midwifery, history/ sociology of midwifery, emotional well-being, continuity of carer, case-loading, midwifery led care, consultant led care, shared care, care planning, maternity voice partnerships, collaborative working, roles of the inter-disciplinary team, MDT working, human factors, critical thinking, safeguarding, communication, being an advocate, birth trauma, human rights, strength-based approaches.

Additional Information:The module will build upon the knowledge gained on the provision of holistic midwifery care. The student will be expected to use evidence to critically evaluate the current context of midwifery practice and how this has an impact on women and families.
Through formative and summative assessment, learning, and teaching, students will be enabled to consider provision of maternity services.
