Aims

1. To critically understand the complexities of progressive theoretical criminology. 2. To move beyond standard ‘textbook’ accounts of crime, deviance and/or social control. 3. To critically evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of progressive/contemporary accounts of crime and deviance in relation to their more established counterparts.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:An indicative range of topics studied includes: • The criminological imagination • Abolitionist perspectives • Neo-colonial criminology • Policing dissent • Human rights criminology • Popular criminology • Visual criminology • Masculinities/gendered criminology • Migration/‘immigration’ • Green criminology
Module Overview:
This module is primarily about challenging established perspectives in Criminology and embracing their more 'progressive' alternatives. The goal of this module is to familiarise you with contemporary developments in the field of theoretical Criminology. It will seek to push your criminological imagination to the cutting edge of disciplinary developments and in so doing provide you with a solid foundation for further study of a progressive nature in Level 6.
