Aims

To enable the student to provide first line assessment and management of complications and additional care needs for the newborn infant and their family. To prepare the student for the midwife’s role in caring for and supporting women and newborn infants requiring medical, obstetric, neonatal, mental health, social care, and other services.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Consolidate knowledge of the normal newborn infant and apply this to the recognition and management of those that are vulnerable and/or compromised, and the differences during very early child development.
2.
Discuss the care required as part of the interdisciplinary team for the vulnerable and/ or compromised newborn infant while comparing their differing or additional needs.
3.
Demonstrate ongoing midwifery care ensuring continuity, being an advocate for women and newborn infants to ensure they are always the focus of care.
4.
Critically evaluate the midwife’s role in caring for and supporting women and newborn infants requiring medical, obstetric, neonatal, mental health, social care, and other services.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:History taking; screening; genetics; genomics; fetal medicine; metabolic disorders; syndromes; anomalies; FAS/FAE; NEC; infection/sepsis; jaundice; prematurity; multiple or higher order births; ill baby; transitional care; special care baby unit; feeding and nutrition; complex methods of feeding; Baby Friendly Initiative; introduction to Newborn Infant Physical Examination; perinatal mortality and morbidity; SIDS; newborn infant loss including post-mortem procedures and memory making; communication; interdisciplinary and multiagency team working; spiritual and cultural awareness; respectful, kind and compassionate care. On-line learning around NIPE standards.
Module Overview:
This module provides you with knowledge of the management of complications and additional care needs for the new-born infant and their family, preparing you for the midwife's role in caring for and supporting women and new-born infants requiring medical, obstetric, neonatal, mental health, social care, and other services.
Additional Information:This module will enable the students to develop the skills and knowledge require to examine and support the vulnerable and compromised neonate and the family.
